between me and my self. For this q&a I am Me and I am also playing the part of myself.
Me question: what is the title of your project
Myself Answer: although initially put off by the idea of a fixed title I think ultimately (THE GIFT SHOP) as a title gives me the freedom to research and develop my own ideas without any constraint
Me: in a nutshell how do you intend to use the space. And more importantly what is the proposed end point
Myself: ideally A fully Functioning gift shop that’s blurred the lines between performance reality and installation. I felt it vital to keep a clever balance between actually looking like a gift shop and playing with the memorable and meaning associated with mementos and their attachment to memories’
Me: is there any media or materials you are particularly interested in using
Myself: I think it is important to let the nature of the idea influence the use of the material or media and not be trapped by any limitation. The thought or notion that something could work better maybe as video in relation to a sculpture or vice versa has a valuable effect on it meaning.

Switchopen
Switchopen is the Illustration and design company run by Nick Rhodes. Nick has been involved within the rock poster scene since 2000. He has designed and illustrated posters for many bands within the UK and United States. Creating hand screen printed limited edition posters for bands including Queens of the Stone age, The Decemberists, Elbow and Ian Brown to name but a few.
He began by illustrating rock posters for his friends band, progressing in to Screen-printing when he purchased and set up his own screen print shop with in Manchester UK. Nick illustrates and hand prints all of his poster work, delivering unique hand drawn and detailed imagery within each of his Rock posters. He has shown his artwork nationally and internationally.
Switchopen is a fully functioning art studio, housing a range of print machines (screen/lino/digital), all primed ready for action to handle a full spectrum of design projects. oh i hate these bits! hmmm well I have a studio at the Crescent Arts in Scarborough, which is great if you want to get away from it all, with nice views. It has been an inspiring place to return to. Theres only about 10 artists in the town probably. I studied in Edinburgh, and rather enjoy grand scale hide and seek. I like meeting people, so if you do to then come for a portrait and bring yer flask.
I would like to invite bargain hunters to have their portrait drawn by me, a simple pen on A4 paper drawing which will take place inside my car, and take about 15 minutes. You in turn are invited to draw me. If you don't mind, our conversation will be recorded whilst this is taking place, we can talk about anything from drawing itself to the price of badges… At the end of the drawing exchange you can take the drawing I did of you and I will keep the drawing you do of me. I will make a copy of the drawing I did of you which will be turned into a badge multiple.
The badges will be available to anyone to buy at a constant increase in rate, first badge of a persons portrait is 10p the next 20p next 30p and so on. Every portrait starts this way. Thus older badges may reach £2 whilst a new portrait will be the better bargain. But it depends if you really want the one that’s £2. Every one who has their portrait done gets one badge of their choice. This does not affect the price of the badges (there is no logic in this). I don’t know what I’ll do with the recordings yet. I know some sonic artists, so may initiate some collaboration. The project overall is ongoing, until I get sick of drawing portraits and/or making badges, perhaps by the end of the summer, perhaps in a couple of years time. You will have to barter to take part in the drawing project as one typically does at a car boot sale or a market in many countries. Bibliotherapy Artist’s Book Library (BABL).
Inspired by an unrelenting desire to make coupled with a passion for the written word, I make objects that house narratives which may otherwise go untold, often manifesting in an installation, multiple or artist’s book. These works generate a dialogue, and create a space in which there is time enough to read, enquire and reflect. While learning the techniques of bookbinding, I discovered the pleasures of printing, the delight in self-publishing, the satisfaction and accessibility of communicating by means of the book. Themes explored in recent works include fecundity and dolls houses, lost love and redundant underwear, rural survival and liberation, salvaged diaries and dementia, solitude and beards, proverbs and heirlooms. Having published over 25 limited editions over the past seven years, my work is collected and held in several major collections in the UK and abroad. Artist multiples are stocked in London, Paris and Los Angeles. Recent commissions include site-specific window installations for ‘Couverture’ London, the Whitstable Biennale, and recent residencies at The V&A Museum of Childhood and Manchester Metropolitan University.
From my studio, I lecture, run workshops, co-curate the International touring exhibition ‘Sitting Room’, help co-ordinate the annual Manchester Artists’ Book Fair and exhibit widely with ‘Righton Press’.

Clients are invited to relax in the ‘reading chair’, tell me their needs/anxieties/dreams/desires, while I select an appropriate artist’s publication where solace can be found.
Are you broken hearted/tired of the commuter train/Do you want to make better use of the city/grow a beard but worry what kind/miss birdsong/need to find inspiration/want a good marmalade recipe/need your faith restoring in the postal system/benefit from hearing a fairytale/need reminding of reasons to get up in the morning?
The Bibliotherapy Artist’s Book Library can help. There’s a wide selection of books on loan ranging in theme, format, humour, beauty, insight, and degree of professionalism from well known to not-known artists. The fee for this service will be one British pound, (the same as joining Manchester City Library), which will entitle the client to life-long membership of BABL and a pristine library card to be presented at future loaning performances. Some works will be available to buy, though all are available to digest in the designated silent study area.

Richard Shields
Having grown up with an interest in drawing and painting, traditional skills have always been prevalent throughout my practice. The pursuit of realism and the concept of defining a subject through visual language have often been combined to create self-reflexive works where an image/object and its medium are intrinsically linked. Taking inspiration from my immediate environment or situation and the objects within it, I attempt to juxtapose the idea of worth and the top end of a hierarchy with the unwanted, discarded and forgettable side of life.

Some us have money and taste and some us have nothing but we know what we like. Art might be for everyone but not everyone is for all art. Everyone’s a critic and everyone’s got an opinion. This work created for ANTIFREEZE brings together what everyone wants, what everyone gets and what everyone voted for as their favourite in Manchester City Art gallery.

Diane Shufflebottom
Shufflebottom graduated with a degree in Fine Art Sculpture in the year 2000. She has since worked for 5 years as a prop maker at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre as well as having made props for Bud Weiser adverts, sculpted microphone stands for ‘The Darkness’ and ‘Motor Head’ tours, exhibited mixed media installations, worked as art director on several film shorts and is currently working as a 3D Design Technician at MMU.
Within her own art work she trys to make serious subject matters more accessible to people by the playful way in which she injects humour into the pieces.
Inspired by the Stephen Fry documentary ‘The secret life of a manic depressive’, I wanted to put his descriptions of the taboo illness in to a scene that may help people try to understand what it is like for the sufferers.
The setting was that of the Mad Hatters tea party, with a place setting at either end of the table for the manic side and the other for the depressed.
Each end had their own specially modified objects to represent their polar opposite states of mind. Moet tea pots appeared to be happily bubbling on ice at one end, whilst at the other, fragile alcohol bottle teapots had down turned chipped and dribbling spouts, and were literally coming apart at the seems.
The apposing ends appeared at war with one another, complete carnage, chaos and destruction fights against meticulous, obsessive compulsive, precision and order. Eventually the depressed end turning on its self, with tea pots which look some what tank like and appear to be shooting at their own troops.
This time I have only used a few components from the original installation, seeing if it is still capable of conveying any of the feelings it did in its original setting.

Sketch City
Sketch city is a monthly event held in manchester that provides walls, tables, boxes, tables, objects, anything for you to doodle over and paint on. "Creating the means to create" from the words of Jonny Dub, the creator and founder of Sketch City.
This is where we met and as cheesey as it sounds became super top friends. It is a love of drawing, doodling, painting and being creative whilst laughing that has kept us together and strong!
As we dont get to see each other that much due to Sketch City taking a little break we will be creating a Sketch City Club House! Somewhere to chill, look at top art, cuddle plushies, eat cakes and get envolved with a wall. There will be a lucky dip and if you bring something to us, we will customise/decorate it with our nimble fingers! Everything will be for sale, possibly even the artists for all your customising needs.
